1. **Oxford Medicine Open Days**
Dear clinical students,
We are in the process of organising this year’s summer Open Days, and
we would like to invite you to participate in the 2010 Open Days for
Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
Every year, visitor feedback suggests that one of the most valuable
components of these events is for prospective students to have the
chance to ask current students questions relating to what it is really
like to be an undergraduate at Oxford, and to find out more about the
colleges, the tutorial system, and student life more generally.
This year’s Open Days are scheduled to take place on Wednesday 30 June,
Thursday 1 July and Friday 17 September (from 9.15am until 4.30pm on
each day).
The Medicine Open Day will be based in the Medical Sciences Teaching
Centre (see
http://www.medsci.ox.ac.uk/study/medicine/courses/preclin/open-days
for details) whilst the Biomedical Sciences Open Day will be in the
Department of Pharmacology (see
http://www.medsci.ox.ac.uk/study/bms/open-days).
We are looking for a number of clinical students to participate, both
to give talks and help on the day.
- ‘Life as an Oxford Medic’
This is a 30 minute talk which is repeated twice on each Open Day
(11.30am-12pm and 3.30-4pm), given each year by a clinical student
(usually in their fifth or sixth year). Past talks have covered
everything from the structure of the course and method of learning, to
favourite activities whilst in Oxford, participation in clubs and
society, and college life. We can provide a number of past Powerpoint
presentations as a starting point.
- Student helpers
Every year we have 10 to 15 students helping throughout the day.
Helpers will be involved with the running of Open Days for both
subjects: academic and administrative staff will be present at both
venues to answer queries on admissions and course structure, etc. You
will move between venues and be responsible for some or all of the
following:
1) Assisting with the visitor registration process.
2) Answering general queries from visitors throughout the day.
3) Taking small groups on informal tours of the MSTC.
4) Directing people to different venues across the University, and
to other science departments.
5) General mingling – being a friendly face and making yourself
generally available to anyone who needs help or information.
We split the days up into AM and PM shifts, though of course it is
preferable if you can offer a full day. You can sign up to help at 1, 2
or all 3 events. We guarantee that you will enjoy taking part, but we
are also able to offer the following:
- AM or PM shift: £10 book token
- Full day: £20 book token (plus free lunch!)
We will also cover reasonable travelling expenses, but you must keep
and submit receipts to claim.
We hope that you will want to get involved – if you are please email us
back at studentadmin@medsci.ox.ac.uk letting us know whether you’d like
to help with the student talks or with running the events, and which
dates you’d be available on.
A full briefing session will be held at the MSTC for all students
taking part at a later date, and you will be provided with a pack
containing a wealth of useful information on admissions.
Thank you!
Best wishes,
Vanina Wittenburg

2. **HUGH CAIRNS SURGICAL SOCIETY TRANSPLANT ROTA**
Starts 15th April
The Hugh Cairns Surgical Society is proud to present a Transplant Rota. As part of this initiative, students will get the chance to accompany the transplant team to the far reaches of the country in order to help them retrieve organs and perhaps get the opportunity to then see them being transplanted into recepients back here in Oxford.
The programme is completely optional. Students get to sign up to be ‘on call’ for 24h (from 8.00am till 8.00am the next morning) during which they can be called by the transplant team should organs become available. They will be expected to be in the hospital within 35-40 minutes and will accompany the team that is dispatched to retrieve the organs.
The programme will hopefully kick off by the 15th of April and sign-up will be on Weblearn. You will have to sign up a minimum of 1 week before the date you intend to be ‘on call’ and, in the interest of equality, we suggest that you limit yourself to 1 shift per month as a maximum (we may alter this based on demand after the first couple of months).
This is a truly unique opportunity and, from what I have heard, a fantastic learning experience. The transplant team are excited to have us on board and are eager for us to get as much out of this as possible.
