1. **Osler House Mixed Touch Rugby**

Enjoy the sunshine while it’s here and get fit at the same time with some extremely un-serious sport. Touch rugby is for everyone – boys and girls, sporty and unfit. We had a great summer of it last year so hope to see as many as possible of you back for more, plus some new faces.

First “training” will be 5pm pm Thursday 29th at the South Parks – meet at the gate just off St. Clements. We’re planning on having a few weekend and weekday sessions over the term, so if you can’t make this one, get in touch anyway and I’ll keep you posted.

We’ll be entering in the Mixed Rugby Cuppers next Wednesday afternoon (5th of May). We were a much-admired wildcard team last time with our distinctive scrubs shorts.

Email me (huw.davies@medschool.ox.ac.uk) if you’re remotely interested. In case you get lost, my number is 07854 353214

Osler House Rugby President

2. **OFMH Talk**

OFMH is proud to present Dr Druin Burch, author of “Taking the medicine”. Working as a practising doctor here in Oxford, Dr Burch’s book has been described as a “gripping history of the blundering progress of medicine”. This is a talk about the history of drugs and our struggle to recognise which treatments are effective and which are not. Doctors pledge to ‘first, do no harm’ yet by relying on belief rather than evidence it is argued that until recently quite the opposite has been happening. He is not the first doctor to express doubts.

This promises to be a thought provoking evening and a definite must for anyone interested in the direction of modern medicine.

As our previous events have had a high attendance, please arrive early to avoid disappointment. A buffet will be provided before the lecture.

Thursday 29th April 2010
Merton College, Mure room

Buffet 6pm for lecture at 6.30pm

All are welcome. For more information e-mail: emma.bodenham@gtc.ox.ac.uk

4. **TCSS Talk**

Dr Morten Kringelbach – ‘The evolution of happiness’
A talk hosted by the Trinity College Scientific Society

Monday 2nd week (03/05/10)

8.00 for 8.15 pm, Trinity College Danson Room

Next Monday we are excited to announce that Dr Morten Kringelbach will be speaking at the Trinity College Scientific Society. His talk will focus on the nature of happiness and the hedonic process, as well as exploring the question of whether a scientific account of happiness is even possible.

Dr Kringelbach is director of the TrygFonden Research Group, a transnational project which aims to understand the biological basis of human happiness, with the hope that such an understanding will enable people to live more fulfilled lives. He is a Senior Research Fellow at Department of Psychiatry, University of Oxford and a Professor atAarhus University, Denmark, as well as Extraordinary JRF and College Lecturer in Neuroscience at The Queen’s College, University of Oxford.

Dr Kringelbach has written extensively on the biological nature of happiness and was a major contributor to the BBC series ‘The Happiness Formula’. His work has been said to ‘move effortlessly between philosophy, anthropology, psychology, and the brain sciences’, and his approach to the science of happiness is both thoughtful and subtle.

The talk is sure to be of interest to people from a wide range of academic backgrounds. Please arrive early to ensure a seat. Wine will be provided.

5. **OSM and OGHG Event**

Oxford Society for Medicine and Oxford Global Health Group present PROFESSOR HUGH MONTGOMERY:

“SURVIVAL: Who lives, Who dies, And why?”

All welcome – FREE entry and NO registration needed – JUST TURN UP!
Snacks and refreshments will be provided!
Tuesday 4th of May 2010, 6.30pm – 8.00pm
Oriel College, Harris Lecture Theatre

We are honoured to bring you Prof Hugh Montgomery, Director of the UCL Institute for Human Health and Performance, and UCL and Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at University College Hospital London. He is also accredited at consultant level in cardiology and internal medicine, and currently leads an expanding research group in the department of cardiovascular genetics at UCL. His research into the responses to exercise training, inflammatory responses in critical care outcome amongst other areas has led to over 100 publications including several in Nature, Lancet and Circulation.

As if this wasn’t enough, Professor Montgomery is also renowned for his super-human array of achievements including running three 100 km ultra-marathons, holding the world record for underwater piano playing, writing a Hollywood produced film in 6 weeks (“Reputation and Control”) and authoring two novels!

Professor Montgomery will be talking on ‘The physiology of human survival’. The human body can cope with remarkable extremes of temperature, from desert to Arctic conditions. It can also endure long periods of starvation and thirst – as any survivor cast adrift at sea will testify. The capacity of the body to recover from the most devastating trauma is impressive and the power of the survival instinct never ceases to surprise…

What happens when these systems are pushed to their absolute limit? Are we all survivors? Or are they special? And, if so, are they born or made?

These questions, amongst others, will be answered in what is guaranteed to be a stimulating and highly thought provoking evening!

Any queries, e-mail: omar.abdel-mannan@medschool.ox.ac.uk

We look forward to seeing you at what promises to be a special event!

6. **Tingewick Bakesale**

Attention all bakers and medics who like to bake!! The second Tingewick bakesale (under the new management) is nearly here, and this time it is Jazz themed! (To rather cunningly tie-in with the Tingewick jazz evening later that day…see what we did there??)

This is happening next FRIDAY 7th MAY from 10:30-5:30, in its usual spot outside lecture theatre 1. But it won’t happen without the help of lovely people like YOU to help us sell as many yummy cakes and cookies as possible! So we would really love you forever if you would give us a hand by doing one (or both!) of the following:
BAKE something for us to sell! And if you are somehow able to incorporate our jazz theme into your culinary delights, even better! So whether you’re a hardened Delia fan or haven’t cooked since you made rice crispie cakes back in year 7, we will welcome the fruits (or should that be cakes?) of your labour with open arms! Here is a link for some inspiration:http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/ Search your favourite ingredient or just whatever you have lying around in the cupboard, and make it into some yummyness for the Tinge!

BUY our delicious goodies! So instead of your usual flapjack/brownie/mars bar from GPEC cafe, bring your custom to Tingewick and raise money for charidee instead…you know it makes sense!

If you’re keen to bake for us, just bring your wares along to our stall or email claire.stead@magd.ox.ac.uk or joanna.cooke@new.ox.ac.uk if you have any questions. Go on, you know you want to! :-)

Alongside this endurance challenge we would like to raise money for K.E.E.N. an Oxford based charity where students support younger special needs children through recreational activities.

Please help us to raise as much money as possible to support this local charity. Any amount would be much much appreciated! To donate visit the following website:http://www.justgiving.com/threepeaksrace

It will only take 5mins (less than that really) and it will make us very very happy! Thank you very much! Naieya x
