1. **MedEd2 booklets now ready**

For 4th years…

MedEd2 booklets are now printed. If you didn’t get one at today’s lectures, the rest are in the Medical School Office – in a box on the worktop on the right just inside the door. There are enough for one each.
It is also on the MedEd page on weblearn:

https://weblearn.ox.ac.uk/portal/hierarchy/medsci/student_site/meded

Or, click on ‘Medical Sciences Division’ tab, then ‘Student sites’ (under Sub-sites on left-hand side), then ‘MedEd’.
Once you’ve visited the site once, it’ll be added to ‘My Active Sites’ so will be easier to find next time.
Hope you find it useful.

2. **Gazette Writers’ Meeting**

Dear All,

The next issue of the Gazette is nearing completion and will soon be going to the printers. However, rather than resting on our laurels, we are already looking ahead to the following issue, the theme of which will be ‘Stranger than fiction’. To this end, there will be a clinical writer’s meeting at 18.00 on Monday 17 May in Classroom 7, JRH Academic Corridor. This is an opportunity for both veteran and budding writers to come along and pitch their ideas, bounce them around, and develop them in response to feedback. The theme has a very broad scope, but please do not feel constrained by it: if you have an idea that’s unrelated to the theme, we’d still love to hear from you. If you’d like to contribute, but can’t make the meeting, please send your ideas in by e-mail to emma.burke@oriel.ox.ac.uk.

Looking forward to seeing lots of you there,

Matt Harris
OMSG Editor

The Health Impact Fund: incentives for improving access to essential medicines
Date:Monday, 17 May 2010
Time:19:30 – 21:30
Location:Green-Templeton College, Barclay Room

On behalf of Oxford Global Health Group
Dr. Amitava Banerjee – The Health Impact Fund: Incentives for improving access to essential medicines
Monday 17th May, 7:30pm
Barclay Room, Green Templeton College
Everyone welcome!
Join us for a discussion of one of the most innovative global health initiatives around: using carrots, not sticks, to ensure the pharmaceutical industry develops the drugs the world’s poorest people need.
Changes in the way pharmaceutical research and development is funded may be essential for improving access to effective medicines.
Dr. Amitava Banerjee is the medical advisor to the Health Impact Fund, a proposed structure aiming to stimulate research and development in life-saving pharmaceuticals, and encouraging low-cost, accessible and effective interventions.
For more details, see this article in the Guardian by the ethicist Peter Singer

5. **Oxford Society for Medicine presents**

PROFESSOR PETER RATCLIFFE, F.R.S.
“Following the oxygen sensing pathway to a career in medical science: expect the unexpected”
Wednesday 19th May, 6.30pm – 8.00pm
Harris Lecture Hall, Oriel CollegeAll welcome! FREE entry, refreshments and snacks for all!

We are honoured to bring you Professor Peter Ratcliffe, who is Nuffield Professor of Clinical Medicine at Oxford and was awarded the highly prestigious Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine in 2009, a prize that is awarded to researchers carrying out outstanding biological research with significant implications for future medicine and healthcare. The award recognises Professor Ratcliffe’s pioneering research on how cells in the body detect how much oxygen is available to them, and especially how they respond to a lack of oxygen. This has led to a better understanding of the development of diseases such as cancer and pulmonary or cardiovascular disease, where a lack of oxygen in the cell plays an important role. Professor Ratcliffe’s team is now working to better understand these pathways and how they can be manipulated for the treatment of these diseases.

On this occasion, Professor Ratcliffe will be talking about his outstanding research from a clinical perspective. This event promises to be a fascinating insight into medical research and the clinical implications for the development of treatments that result from such translational research. Any questions, please email: Anisha.bhagwanani@medschool.ox.ac.uk
We look forward to seeing you there!
