1. **Professionalism Talk**

Dear All,
This is a quick reminder that TODAY (Thursday 13th May) at 17:30 in the Wing Tat Lee room there will be a talk from Dr. Roddis on the topic of “Professionalism: Champion or Charlatan”
Whilst the topic isn’t the most high-octane choice – Dr. Roddis is an excellent speaker set to take an interesting angle on the issue, and the event is sponsored by Wesleyan Medical Sickness – which means there will be cake! And drinks.
I would be delighted if as many of you wold come along as possible,
I look forward to seeing you there,

George Chapman
Osler Academic Rep

2. **Gazette Writers’ Meeting**

Dear All,
The next issue of the Gazette is nearing completion and will soon be going to the printers. However, rather than resting on our laurels, we are already looking ahead to the following issue, the theme of which will be ‘Stranger than fiction’. To this end, there will be a clinical writer’s meeting at 18.00 on Monday 17 May in Classroom 7, JRH Academic Corridor. This is an opportunity for both veteran and budding writers to come along and pitch their ideas, bounce them around, and develop them in response to feedback. The theme has a very broad scope, but please do not feel constrained by it: if you have an idea that’s unrelated to the theme, we’d still love to hear from you. If you’d like to contribute, but can’t make the meeting, please send your ideas in by e-mail to emma.burke@oriel.ox.ac.uk.

Looking forward to seeing lots of you there,
Matt Harris
OMSG Editor

3. **From Genomes to Health**

Sir Mark Walport
Buffet 6pm; Lecture 6.30pm
Monday 4th Week (17th May)
Merton College, Mure room

OFMH is proud to present “From Genomes to Health”, a talk by Sir Mark Walport concerning the Human Genome Project, its most recent advances and future directions.
As Director of the Wellcome Trust, Sir Mark Walport heads one of the world’s largest biomedical research charities, which spends over £400 million every year, pursuing its mission to foster and promote research with the aim of improving human and animal health.
Since the Human Genome Project began in 1990 both a working and complete draft of the genome have been published providing us with clues to the understanding of human biology and revolutionizing the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.
This promises to be a fascinating evening providing an insight into our current understanding of the Human Genome and its future potential.
As our previous events have had a high attendance, please arrive early to avoid disappointment. A buffet will be provided before the lecture.

5. **Alcohol Survey**

You could win £20 worth of book tokens……by filling in a short
survey.

You are invited to take part in a study we are conducting into the use
of alcohol by medical students.

Alcohol misuse poses a major public health challenge and doctors are
known to have higher rates of alcohol misuse. We are interested in
establishing to what extent this may already be the case in medical school and explore
some of the demographic factors associated with the use of alcohol in this
group.

Participation will take no longer than five minutes and can be
completed on line via weblearn. All answers are anonymous and
participation/non-participation will have no impact upon your grades
or course reports. If you do decide to take part you will have the option
of entering a prize draw for £20 worth of book tokens.

6. **ASIAN FLUSH! Earn £50!!**

We’re trying to recruit people of SE Asian origin for one of
our clinical studies, both flushers and non-flushers (as we need a
control group). The study involves a single trip for a morning or
afternoon to the JR where we do a forearm study to assess vascular
responses. The whole thing lasts around 2-3 hours and we cover expenses
and compensate to the tune of £50 in shopping vouchers. If you’re able
to publicise our study we’d be eternally grateful.

I’ve attached an information sheet.
