The Oxford Society for Medicine presents a unique conference:
*** HEALTHCARE UNDER SIEGE: Supporting medical education in the occupied Palestinian territory ***
All welcome – FREE entry – NO registration required – JUST TURN UP!
Thursday 13th May 2010, 6.00pm – 8.30pm
Oxford University, St. Catherine’s College, Bernard Sunley Lecture Theatre
Question: What do the founder of the Cochrane Collaboration, the first surgeon to perform a heart transplant in the UK and the Editor of the world’s leading general medical journal, The Lancet have in common?
Answer: By volunteering in the occupied Palestinian territories, they all have direct personal experience of the obstacles to health care delivery in one of the most challenging and dangerous environments in the world.
—————————————————————————————————
Join us as we host the leading luminaries of the medical and surgical world in a stimulating and thought-provoking audience-driven discussion on the experiences of the International Medical community in tackling a uniquely challenging predicament.
How can we account for the medical crisis in Gaza and the West Bank? What are the barriers to health care delivery in the Occupied Palestinian Territory? How can they be overcome? And what is Oxford’s place in supporting medical education in resource poor or conflict affected areas?
This will be an unmissable event for anyone who wants to get closer to the truth behind healthcare in the Palestinian territories and for those with an interest in making a positive change to the world around them
Any queries, please e-mail: omar.abdel-mannan@medschool.ox.ac.uk

6. **ALCOHOL…….**
You are invited to take part in a study we are conducting into the use of alcohol by medical students.
Alcohol misuse poses a major public health challenge and doctors are known to have higher rates of alcohol misuse. We are interested in establishing to what extent this may already be the case in medical school and explore some of the demographic factors associated with the use of alcohol in this group.
Participation will take no longer than five minutes and can be completed on line via weblearn. No personally identifiable information will be collected and participation/non-participation will have no impact upon your grades or course reports. If you do decide to take part you will have the option of entering a prize draw for £20 worth of book tokens.

7. **Restart**
Hi everyone,
Just a reminder that we’re trying to get RESTART up and running again. RESTART involves teaching basic life support at local secondary schools. It’s really important for young people to know a bit about BLS and this is also great for your CV. The commitment is however much you want it to be. You can just come to one session or you can come to many if you enjoy it.
We really need more people to volunteer for RESTART to work so please please email me at victoria.grabowski@medschool.ox.ac.uk if you’re interested.
Thanks so much,
Victoria x

9. **Neurocardiology Elective at NIH**
Dear All,
I am one of the final year students and thought I would let you all know about a great elective opportunity. As you all may be aware, Oxford and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) (Besthesda, Maryland, USA) have an agreement for students to participate in electives. I have had a great time working with the Neurocardiology Lab at the NIH. They work with patients with Parkinson Disease, Multiple System Atrophy, Pure Autonomic Failure, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and other conditions with autonomic dysfunction. I have had a brilliant time working with my supervisor, Dr. David Goldstein, and he informed me that he would be delighted to have more Oxford students.

You need a keen eye for detail and you must have access to a computer and the internet.

together with a covering note explaining how many hours you would have available to give us per week and on what days.
Pay will be per hour and in line with national minimum wage (£5.80 ph).

12. **THREE PEAKS RACE**
God that was a long bulletin. Do you know what else is long? Ben Nevis.
This weekend a group of us (medics) climbed the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales.
Alongside this endurance challenge we would like to raise money for K.E.E.N. an Oxford based charity where students support younger special needs children through recreational activities.
Please help us to raise as much money as possible to support this local charity. Any amount would be much appreciated.
To donate visit: http://www.justgiving.com/ThreePeaksRace
(There’s also a facebook group titled: Three Peaks Race!)
Thank you very very much!
