2. ***Osler House Ski Trip 2010***
Hello all you Osler medics. As promised at hustings I’m working on organising an Osler ski trip for the Christmas holidays 2010, open to all.
I’d like to get an idea of interest so that when I negotiate with the tour operators I have some rough numbers of people that are likely to go (which makes getting an accurate quote easier).
The details to bear in mind right now are:
Dates: 26th Dec – 2nd Jan
Resort: Check the survey, look at the options
Price: £300-£350 base price (i.e. transport, accommodation, ski pass, insurance. This price is an estimate. It depends on which operator, which resort, and numbers!)
I’ve made a super short survey available at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7J3YM69
Let me know what you think (if you have any specific questions please email Rob.middleton@medschool.ox.ac.uk)

5. ***Summer Open day***
Dear clinical students,
We are in the process of finalising this year’s summer Open Days, and we are now looking for a clinical student to give the ‘Life as an Oxford Medic’ talk on Thursday 1 July 2010 (once in the morning at 11.30am and once in the afternoon at 3.30pm).
This is 30 minute talk is given each year by a clinical student (usually in their fifth or sixth year) – past talks have covered everything from the structure of the course and method of learning, to favourite activities whilst in Oxford, participation in clubs and societies, and college life. We can provide a number of past Powerpoint presentations as a starting point.
Every year, visitor feedback suggests that one of the most valuable components of these events is for prospective students to have the chance to ask current students questions relating to what it is really like to be a medic in Oxford, and to find out more about the colleges, the tutorial system, and student life more generally.
We hope that you will want to get involved – if you are please email us back at studentadmin@medsci.ox.ac.uk.
A full briefing session will be held at the MSTC on 17 June (next Thursday), which you are welcome to attend. You will be provided with a pack containing a wealth of useful information on admissions.
Thank you!
Best wishes,

6. ***ALCOHOL…….***
You are invited to take part in a study we are conducting into the use of alcohol by medical students.
Alcohol misuse poses a major public health challenge and doctors are known to have higher rates of alcohol misuse. We are interested in establishing to what extent this may already be the case in medical school and explore some of the demographic factors associated with the use of alcohol in this group.
Participation will take no longer than five minutes and can be completed on line via weblearn. No personally identifiable information will be collected and participation/non-participation will have no impact upon your grades or course reports. If you do decide to take part you will have the option of entering a prize draw for £20 worth of book tokens.

If you have any questions please contact: Thomas.abbott@medschool.ox.ac.uk
Many thanks,
Tom Abbott (5th year medic)

7. ***MDU coverage for electives / placements abroad***
Emma, Arif and I met up with the MDU sponsorship rep this week and they are going to continue sponsoring Osler house events throughout the year! A couple of things came up during this meeting that we’d like to pass on to you. Firstly, if you are going abroad for a clinical placement at any point in your 5th or 6th year its worth letting the MDU know you are going as they will then provide free indemnity for you whilst you’re there. I think everyone should be signed up to the MDU by now (if not its easy to do online) so all you need to do is ring 0800716376 and let them know when and where you’re going.
Secondly, the MDU have a huge number of book discounts that you can access via the link below that covers books from ECG made easy to the Lonely Planet guides.
