3. **Oxford Book Transplant**

Ever wondered what the random bookcase in front of the library was about? Well, Oxford Book Transplant collects books from the Cairns’ library, Banbury and Milton Keynes for shipment to Medical Schools in the developing world. The majority of our books are less than 10 years old and it is incredibly rewarding and sustainable project to get involved with. Currently we have over 1000 kg of books and we are arranging shipments to Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Uganda and Sudan. We’re looking to recruit people who can source medical institutions with a genuine need, shipping agents and suppliers, as well as fundraising and contacting publishers. Patience, flexibility as well as upper body strength are definite skills you’ll develop! We’re aiming to pack up the Sierra Leone shipment in mid- July.
If you’re interested, please contact joe.piper@gmail.com

4. **University of Leeds Medical Fair**

I am writing to let you know about our upcoming Medical Careers Fair, which may be of interest to the Oxford School of Medicine. This event is targeting medical students in their clinical years of training and junior doctors. The aim of the fair is to raise the awareness of career opportunities that are available to medical students and doctors and to help them increase their chances of entering their desired career paths. This fair will be heavily marketed both locally and nationally.

You can find further details about this event via http://www.medicine.leeds.ac.uk/careers/

If you would like any further details or would like to book a place, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards

Andrea Kelly

5. **Housemate required**
Hi,

We’re Ellie and Joe, 2 Grad Entry Medics with an easygoing outlook on life, looking for a 3rd housemate (after she’s been appointed junior dean in a college) and were wondering if any of you were still looking for accommodation.

It’s a beautiful house, with the ground floor comprising living room, dining room (with upright piano) and kitchen (recently refurbished
with dishwasher). There is a long, well maintained garden with rotary drier. There are 3 bedrooms and a well fitted bathroom. The house is 15 mins bike ride from the hospital, just 3 mins walk from Tesco on Cowley Road and is on a quiet road situated near to South Parks, but very close to the centre of Oxford. Rent will be £350 pcm.

And about us? I’m Joe, a 3rd year grad entry medic who is also president of Oxford Global Health Group and does lots of stuff on
developing world medicine. I also enjoy cooking, travelling and volunteering, chilling and partaking of the wit and repartee… Ellie
is a 3rd year grad entry medic who also enjoys veggie cooking travelling to many places and chilling with the still.

So we’d like a nice, friendly and relaxed home with lots of banter. If you’re interested please get in touch with us at
eleanor.scull@medschool.ox.ac.uk and joseph.piper@medschool.ox.ac.uk and we’ll do our best to show you the house this week.

Thanks very much!
All the best

Joe and Ellie

8. **BMA election statements**
Dear Medics

Please read the below messages from Tom Henderson and Ben Maruthappu about why you should vote for them in the BMA Medical Students’ Committee (MSC). Voting is open now and will close at noon on Friday 25th June. This election will decide who represents all Oxford medical students on the national stage next academic year, which promises to be an absolutely crucial year for the future of medical education. Only those who are members of the BMA will have been sent details on how to vote.

I urge all of you who can to vote in this election.

Best wishes,
Will

Tom Henderson – 3rd year, Christ Church College

Hello everyone, my name is Tom and I*m a third year medic. I want to
be your representative to the BMA*s medical student council, to help
make your voices heard in influencing BMA and hopefully government
policy. This is a really important year for medical students, with the
Browne review of fees and reorganisation of job application systems, so
its more important than ever that we make our voices heard.

I want to give you more information about what the BMA is up to on your
behalf (with your money) so that you can hold it and me accountable.
I*ll let you know what is planned for MSC meetings in advance and
the outcomes of discussion afterwards to enable me to represent your
views and not just my own.

Secondly, in the year that Lord Browne reports on tuition fees, it*s
so important that we make our voices heard on this issue. Lifting the
cap on student fees is being considered: whilst this would be bad for
all students it risks being catastrophic for medical students (US
medical students for instance can graduate with hundreds of thousands of
£s worth of debt) if special dispensations are not properly argued for
and implemented.

Thirdly, I want to work for fair job allocation. Current third years
will be the first to face a new system of F1 job allocation, but we
mustn*t be put through an untested system which is no real improvement
on the old. I want the BMA to do all it can to make sure selection is
fair so that students can be better compared across different medical
schools, as well as within them. We also need to take an active interest
in the selection procedures for specialist jobs as these are not all
that far away; we should also apply more pressure to lower the fees for
the Membership exams that we will one day sit.

I*ve gained experience of medical politics, working last summer in
the House of Commons for opposition (and now government) health
spokesmen, and would seek to use the insights I gained for your
advantage. We need to frame our campaigns in ways that get meaningful
attention. Last of all, I want to wish the best of luck to everyone with
upcoming exams! Thank you, Tom

Ben Maruthappu – 4th year, Green Templeton College

Experience and Aims:

I am very motivated to join the MSC and have a role in both
representing medical students and maximising their university
experience. I have a broad skill-set based on the organisations I have
been involved with. I was the sole representative for students on the
medical teaching boards at Cambridge during my preclinical studies. I
have founded six medical organisations most recently the United Kingdom
Medical Students* Association (UKMSA). As a member of the MSC I would
like to:

i) Raise the student profile of the BMA in Oxford, making students
aware of their facilities and the benefits of BMA membership
ii) Breed closer ties between the BMA and the student Medical societies
in Oxford
iii) Motivate more students to get involved at an earlier stage in
their medical school careers
iv) Work synergistically with the UKMSA
