EVENTS
1. ***Stroke Awareness Morning***
For the last couple of years, about 6-8 Oxford clinical students have run a very popular and successful Stroke Awareness morning in the village of Chipping Norton (about a 20min drive from Oxford) in connection with the Chipping Norton Rotary club. We have been asked to come and run one again this year on the morning of Saturday 2nd April from around 8.45am to 12.30pm and so I need a few volunteers to come and help out. Shouldn’t be too strenuous- just giving out some leaflets, talking people through them and answering any questions. In return, you will receive free tea and biscuits, valuable CV points and, perhaps most importantly, a warm and fuzzy feeling inside from knowing you are helping out others!

If you’re interested please email emma.forman@medschool.ox.ac.uk

—————————————————————————————————————————-
2. ***Sherrington society talk***
The Sherrington Society is pleased to welcome *Dr. Carl Heneghan*, who will be speaking on Thursday, March 10th at 8:30 pm in the Magdalen College New
Rooms.

Carl Heneghan is a Reader in Evidence-Based Medicine, Director of the Centre of Evidence-Based Medicine and a General Practitioner. His research involves cardiovascular disease, self-monitoring in chronic diseases, and determining the evidence base for treatment of infections. He does considerable teaching on EBM, has written prolifically and has a number of high profile publications in the BMJ, Lancet, and Cochrane Database.
Dr. Heneghan also writes a very insightful blog called Trust the Evidence, where research findings are put to the test in the light of evidence-based medicine.

Dr Heneghan has been interested throughout his research career in thevalidity of clinical trial results. His talk will focus on the historical perspective of what has gone wrong with the publication of clinical trial results in the published literature as we know it. Using his recent work with international colleagues: *Ensuring safe and effective drugs* published in the BMJ He will focus on what Needs to change. This talk will be of interest to anyone interested in knowing what they are prescribing or are being prescribed. If you swallow a medication, you need to know how it worksfor real.

With evidence-based medicine such a core issue in today’s clinical practice, Dr. Heneghan’s talk, entitled “The crisis in medical publishing of clinical trials”, will be extremely relevant and undoubtedly a fascinating talk.

All are welcome! Drinks and nibbles will be available from 8.15pm.
We look forward to seeing you there!

—————————————————————————————————————————-

4. ***The Series: Living and Dying Well***

Helend and Douglas House talk at The Series: ‘Living and Dying Well’ 7.30pm next Wednesday (8th Week)

Please join Friends of Helen and Douglas House next Wednesday (8th week) at The Series. The talk, titled Living and Dying Well will be given by a volunteer and fundraiser at Helen and Douglas House.

WHEN: 7.30pm (doors 7.15pm) on the 9th of March (Wednesday of 8th Week)

WHERE: Saskatchewan Room, Exeter College

This workshop will focus on the works of Helen & Douglas House and how they experience life and death.

The workshop is interactive throughout and covers the following areas, with Helen & Douglas House as the underlying theme:
- Introducing the subject of death
- How we can reflect on the lessons learnt from Helen & Douglas House guests
- Death in different cultures
- Our ideas about loss and bereavement

Ellen Jardine is running this workshop. She is a community fundraiser who also volunteers on the care team at Douglas House. This puts her in the unique position of having these two different perspectives of the organisation. She is trained in talking about death and dying, and knows how useful this can be even when just fundraising for the house as people often have many questions about the subject.

Please come along to what will be a fantastic and thought provoking evening.

—————————————————————————————————————————-
Monday 7th March, 7.30pm, Green-Templeton College (Barclay Room)

Three consultants (Dr Alison Shefler, Dr Janet Craze and Dr Emma Fergusson) will share their own experiences of paediatrics (in intensive care, general/ renal medicine and psychiatry) and give advice on how to build a successful career in this exciting specialty.

Speaker information:

- Dr Alison Shefler has been a Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care at the John Radcliffe Hospital since 1997. She qualified from the University of Toronto in 1984, initially pursuing GP training before switching to Paediatrics at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. She trained in Paediatric Intensive Care at Camperdown Children’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia and at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Dr Shefler is committed to education at both undergraduate and postgraduate level as Royal College of Paediatrics Regional Advisor for the Oxford Deanery. She has led within the School of Paediatrics in Simulation training and has a strong interest in patient safety and training in non-technical skills or “human factors” as they apply to effective clinical practice
- Dr Janet Craze trained in London, Oxford and Reading and currently practices in the John Radcliffe Hospital as a general paediatrician with interests in paediatric oncology and paediatric renal medicine: most of her current work is in general paediatrics but she also runs a specialist renal clinic and has a role in child protection as the ‘Named doctor for safeguarding’ which involves teaching and offering clinical support.
- Dr Emma Ferguson is a child and adolescent psychiatrist, studying medicine at Cambridge (pre-clinical) and Oxford (clinical). She did a year of paediatrics at the Royal Free Hospital and then completed her basic psychiatry training at the Maudsley Hospital before doing specialist training in the Oxford Deanery.

7. ***The Journal of Global Health is now accepting scholarly research papers and editorial piecesfor its Spring 2011 issue***
The health and survival of human populations depend on the collective efforts of scientists, public policy makers, medical practitioners, and professionals in many other fields. The dominant global health issues today will require increasingly interdisciplinary approaches to solving them. To date, there is no peer-reviewed journal that seeks to examine issues in epidemiology and global health from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Based at Columbia University, the Journal of Global Health is the first international publication of its kind that seeks to increase awareness of global health issues and propose innovative solutions to these problems through scientific research and academic dialogue. The content of the journal will engage issues that are associated with a wide range of health topics, including biotechnology, environmental health, epidemiology, infectious diseases, microfinance institutions, mHealth/eHealth, public health policy, and sustainable development. We invite the submission of all papers that address behavioral, biological, environmental, political, or socioeconomic factors that affect the health of individuals and populations and also identify ways to improve public health throughout the world.

Until March 14, 2011, we will be accepting:
-Original Academic Research Papers (2500-3500 words) – Pieces that address a specific area of global health
-News Editorials (1200 word maximum) – Opinion pieces that analyze a recent development in global health
-Field notes (2000 word maximum) – Journal-style pieces based on direct work in the field

Please turn in all submissions www.ghjournal.org/submit by March 14, 2011. If you have any questions, please contact me directly.

The BBC has begun its search for contestants for the 2011 series of Mastermind.

Contrary to popular belief the Mastermind team is not looking for experts, it wants people who are prepared to become experts in the subjects that they love. So whether your passion is Florence + The Machine or Florence Nightingale, Michelangelo or Michael Jackson, all are welcome to apply!

This year, we would love to see some more women applying to take part in the series (after all, Mastermind’s first three champions were all women!) and to this end, please find attached some additional material.

Kind regards
Alex

3. ***Is Health a Human Right – Monday 1st November***
Is Health a Human Right? Susan Wright, director of Doctors of the World UK,
Mon 1st Nov 7.30pm, Green-Templeton College Lecture theatre

Although the principle is enshrined in numerous treaties and conventions, few of us consider health a human right. What does this mean for doctors? What about people interested in Global Health policy? What does it mean to take a Rights-based approach when providing healthcare to vulnerable populations, both overseas and here in the UK? Doctors of the World UK runs a London-based clinic, as well as providing healthcare to people in crisis throughout the world. Come for a discussion about working to ensure that health is a human right.

Susan joined Doctors of the World UK after five years in Bosnia and Herzegovina where she worked with Paddy Ashdown as Head of the Rule of Law Department at the Office of the High Representative. She studied at Howard University and Harvard University in addition to being a Fulbright Scholar. She has taught International Criminal Law and worked in Sierra Leone for the war crimes tribunal. She leads the team at Doctors of the World UK, with a particular focus on advocacy.

1 – head to www.ski-alpine.co.uk

2 – enter our booking reference (OHSKI)

3 – sign up for a new account

4 – tick all your options/lessons/gear etc.

5 – pay your deposit

6 – sit back, relax, and feel good

Notes from me

1 – Insurance. You must have insurance. Literally. Must have. Don’t automatically assume you need to get the insurance offered on the Ski Alpine website. Many of you may be covered by your parents insurance, your own insurance policy, or you may be able to find a cheaper insurance policy for a week trip online. Ultimately, whatever you do, you need insurance (i.e. have at least a copy of the policy certificate you can bring with you). Helicopters are expensive.

2 – Stash is offered on the website as a hoody at 15 pounds a go. I’m currently working on some sponsorship to subsidise this, but it didn’t come through in time before booking went live. Thus, everyone will be getting some money from me on the trip…

3 – Free stuff. I’ve managed to lay my hands on some free gear (over a hundred quids worth) which will be raffled off to people coming on the trip. Includes a Dakine rucksack, goggles, T-shirts etc.

4 – If you have any questions at all please email me at rob.middleton@medschool.ox.ac.uk

1. ***Tingewick – last call to get involved***
Hello everyone,

We are nearly done casting the Panto! Thank you and well done to everyone who auditioned, it was so much fun meeting you all and you all did really well.

However, before we finalise the cast we wanted to make sure that there isn’t anyone who still wants to be involved in Tingewick but hasn’t gotten in touch. Remember even if you don’t want to be on stage or in the band, there’s still design, tech and backstage. If you have any doubts, feel free to email me and I’ll reassure this is the perfect antidote to LabMed boredom!

Also, if you have not received emails from me about auditions and call backs, but had signed up to them, pls also let me know ASAP!

Miss Lakhoo is an executive member of the international forum for the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons and has extensive experience working in the developing world, recently releasing a book called “Paediatric Surgery: a comprehensive text for Africa”. 9. ***Oxford medical school gazette***
Final reminder of opportunity to get research published. Deadline on Monday!

Chance to get research published extended. Deadline on Monday!

The Oxford Medical School Gazette is currently introducing a peer review section. This will include research from UK medical students, with all papers being fully peer reviewed by a specialist in the relevant field. We hope that this will be an excellent opportunity for students to have their work published in a fully peer reviewed journal, and are therefore encouraging submission of your research. The research may be in any area: laboratory-based, clinical or audit-related. Our only stipulations are that:
1. The research must not have been published in any other journal.
2. The research must have been carried out when the author(s) were medical students.
3. The research must have been completed after 1 July 2009.
4. The research paper must be edited and formatted to comply with the attached guidelines, most notably being under 1500 words.
5. Effort should be made to relate the research as clearly as possible to clinical medicine.
6. The deadline for submission has been extended to 5pm on Monday 4th October.
Please contact us [gazette@medschool.ox.ac.uk] if you are unsure whether your work meets these criteria or if you have any further questions.
The peer review section will include approximately three 1500-word research papers from UK medical students. However, we intend to give a reasonable weighting to Oxford research as this is, after all, the Oxford Medical School Gazette. We hope this will encourage as many of you as possible to get involved.
The specifics of how our peer review process will function are included in the attached pdf file. We look forward to your responses.
1. ***Tingewick auditions***
Hello everyone,

This is just a quick note to say well done to everyone who has auditioned so far – you’ll be hearing from us about call backs soon!
However, if you have not yet auditioned nor put your name down for auditions, theres still time. In particular we have slots for auditions on Saturday at 12.15.

Email me anna.kaleva@medschool.ox.ac.uk

—————————————————————————————————————————
2. ***Sports and socs notices***

1 – Medics Varsity

Medics Varsity 2010 will be taking place on the 9th and 10th October, and we’ll be battling the light blues at rugby, men’s football, women’s netball, mixed netball, men’s/women’s/mixed tennis, ultimate frisbee, table tennis, badminton, squash, hockey and cricket (maybe). We might even sort rounders/lacrosse/croquet between now and then as well. The majority of sports will be held at Lincoln Sports Grounds.

So, email the captain/president of the sport you want to be involved in, register your interest, and clear your calendar for that weekend, so we can crush the opposition – it is home ground after all!

2 – Osler House Ski Trip 2010

The ski trip is confirmed, and booking will open very soon, in the meantime, head over to the facebook event and register your interest (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/event.php?eid=1280708605775730). I’ll be sending another email when booking open with instructions on how to go from there. Suffice to say, it’s going to be massive/righteous/gnarly/sick/rad/fresh/amazing. Get keen.

3 – Sports/Socs Funding Requests 2010/11

The time has come for sports and societies to request funding for the coming year. Captains/Presidents/Treasurers please use the attached form – print it off, fill it in, and put it in Rob Middleton or Naieya Madhvani’s Osler pigeon hole (don’t type them out and email them, we need them in hardcopy). Be aware however that the Treasurer has informed me that money is extremely tight, so funding requests need to be very well thought out and reasonable, otherwise he will turn the requests down. It is highly likely each club will receive less than they did last year, so spend wisely.

4. ***Restart***

This coming tuesday (28th September) a group of us are going to the Cheney School (next to Brookes) to teach some year 8 students basic life support, a session organised by the Osler society called Restart which arranges similar sessions for medical students throughout the year.
We really need more volunteers (from 9-10am, 10-11am and 2-3pm) so if anyone is free to help out at any of these sessions please email restart.oxford@googlemail.com – also please email if you would like to be added to the mailing list to find out about future Restart events. no experience at all is required- we’re only teaching basic life support, and the way it works is that one of us does a short intro and demonstration then we split into small groups, each teaching around 5-6 children- it’s really good fun, is a brilliant way to serve the local community and may ultimately help save a life!

thanks very much

6. ***Student elective program***

Dear Colleagues

Following on from our correspondence with you in July regarding our exciting opportunity for final year medical students to apply for musculoskeletal student electives sponsored by Arthritis Research UK, I am emailing to update you.

We have now awarded 3 electives under the scheme, however we still have two funding places left.

The electives we still have available are:

Lithuania February – March

India November – February

South Africa October – April (excluding December)

Madagascar November – April

The original deadline was 26th July 2010, however we have now added an additional deadline which is 29th September 2010.

The programme provides the opportunity and funding for medical students to take part in an elective between October 2010 and April 2011, although the exact timing will depend on the university.

In order to qualify students must be studying in a UK Medical School and must be willing to accept the elective opportunity if offered. Arthritis Research UK will fund flights, accommodation and subsistence costs.

For further details about applying please visit our website:

http://www.arthritisresearchuk.org/arthritis_information/information_for_medical_profes/student_electives.aspx

Other schemes and resources we offer students can be seen at:

http://www.arthritisresearchuk.org/home/medical_students.aspx

We would be very grateful if you would remind students of this opportunity and make them aware of the extended deadline.

Yours sincerely

Donna Lakin

—————————————————————————————————————————–

“Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Following Samir’s skillfully crafted and insightful Osler Bulletins whilst I was away, a number of people have asked me to continue his series of inspirational quotes at the end of the emails so I thought I’d start this week. 1. ***Seriously – stop sticking up posters in Osler house!!***
Having sent round a number of emails asking people not to stick posters up in Osler house, I confidently arrived at the BOP sure that the walls to be clear and looking beautiful. Unfortunately a few people are STILL sticking posters up – not a clever idea as I know who you are and will be hunting you down from now on…

————————————————————————————————————————–
3. ***Lost property***
I have gathered up a huge amount of lost property after the last BOP including phones, cardigans, sunglasses and even pants. If you think you’ve lost something send me an email and I will try to match you up with your possessions

————————————————————————————————————————–
4. ***The future of academic medicine***
The topic of the talk is “The Future of Academic Medicine” and the speaker is Sir Mark Walport. Sir Mark has been a key figure in both medical research and academic medical training. He is currently the director of the Wellcome Trust and was the author of the Walport Report which changed the whole way academic training was organised in this country. We are therefore very pleased that he has agreed to give this talk.

Spaces at this event are unfortunately limited, so we are asking people to confirm attendance by e-mail before Sept 23rd.

The organisers of the talk are the Society of Academic Foundation Trainees (SAFT). We are a group of Academic Trainees in the first 2 years post-medical school who have come together to organise events for junior doctors interested in academic medicine/medical research. Speaking to a number of medical students, it has become clear that this information needs to get out earlier, ideally before students have to make decisions about applying for Foundation jobs, and so we are looking to publicise these talks especially amongst students in the last 3 years of their studies. We have a mailing list, so if any student wants to find out more about future events they should get in touch and we can add them. The e-mail address is a.krom@saftuk.org.

————————————————————————————————————————–
5. ***PAINTBALLING and AMATEUR TRANSPLANTS***

The Royal Society of medicine are organising two great (and fun!) events in the near future.

—

1) National London Conference – Best for the New 4th Years Medics – complement your MedEd work!

Clinical skillz – featuring the Amateur Transplants in concert!
A fun yet informative event aimed at people early in their medical degrees, but everyone is welcome. This event is an introduction for students to the RSM, to see it, use it and enjoy it. The event will end with a performance by the Amateur Transplants and a free wine reception.

Friday 29 October 2010
Venue: Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, LONDON, W1G 0AE

Book at: http://www.rsm.ac.uk/students/stb01.php

More information on the Amateur Transplants

http://www.amateurtransplants.net/

—

2) Medical Student Paintballing

On Saturday the 9th October we’ve organised a great deal for students – much cheaper than you’d get otherwise – plus the opportunity to meet and network with students from all over the country.

Saturday 9 October 2010

The Student Members’ Group present a fun day at Mayhem Paintballing! At one of the UK’s best sites for adrenalin-fuelled fun.

Paintball is an extreme sport. All players are equipped with the latest paintball equipment and this includes specialist paintball safety equipment. Check out the link below to see the scenarios that we will be playing for the day:

http://www.mayhem-paintball.co.uk/scenarios

Try a real 38 tonne battle tank, and two armoured personal carriers with usable mounted paintball machine guns (not forgetting a few army jeeps for good measure) all in one playing area!
