Hi Osler!

Hope the return to 5th/6th year hasn’t been too painful. We thought we’d introduce ourselves as your Welfare reps for the year, and remind everyone of the welfare services available from Osler. There’s also a 5th-year specific message about medic-children, the formation of a group to discuss alcohol use in medical students and news of the first welfare event: A CAKE PARTY!

1. Cake Party: Tuesday!

The first welfare event of the year will be this Tuesday (19th July) at 1pm in Osler, when we’ll be providing a selection of yummy sweet snacks to supplement your lunch. Being in the hospital when your friends are sunning themselves on holiday doesn’t have to be miserable: come along to *fingers crossed* chill out in the sun *definitely* with some cake.

2. Fourth Year Adoption Time!

It’s nearly that time of year when we’ll all be hearing the pitter-patter of tiny 4th year feet, which means adoption is fast approaching! We know some of you have partnered up already, but for those who are still free and single: get proposing! Single sex couples are of course more than welcome. Once you’ve found that special someone please drop us an email (addresses below) with your names, as soon as possible, or sign-up here (http://tinyurl.com/oslerparents2011), and we’ll give you a couple of children (or 3 if you’re lucky!) to cherish. Parenting isn’t a big commitment and is a great way to integrate the new 4th years.

3. Alcohol discussion group

The medical school is reviewing their guidelines on alcohol use in medical students and would like our help and opinions. We are looking to set up a small committee of around ten people from across the years, with as wide a range of opinions on alcohol consumption as possible. Please email Laura or Will if you are interested in taking part, we’d really appreciate your views.

4. Welfare support network

Your lovely peer supporters are on always on hand to offer a chat, reassurance or simply a shoulder to cry on. Feel free to get in touch with them with any problem no matter how big or small. Their email addresses are at the bottom.

5. Welfare supplies

Drop either of us an email if you’d like condoms, lube, pregnancy tests or a rape alarm pidged to you discretely and confidentially. Laura has a small emergency stash of supplies (including tampons) in her pidge for you to help yourselves to. We’re hoping to expand our selection of supplies soon: do get in touch if you think there’s something we ought to be providing!

Questions, concerns, worries? We’re always on hand to help, just drop us an email.

Welfare love,

OK guys, exciting news – soon you shall all be hearing the patter of tiny 4th-year feet, and this can mean only one thing – adoption time! So find yourself a partner (same sex couples are more than welcome, welfare is a broad church and much like Argentina open our arms wide and embrace pairings of all sorts) and let either myself or Sheila know about the happy union. We will then bless you each with your own little bundle of pride and joy, to mould into your own image (or neglect, but please don’t do this, it would make me very sad). If you think that the responsibility would be too much than you can opt out (but we’d really appreciate it if you’d let us know, otherwise we might just give you a child anyway), but the commitment really isn’t very much, and it’s a great way to begin the integration of our years into one big happy family.

Welfare love,

Chris

What to do if you think you might have mumps
Call your College Doctor or Nurse immediately, describe the symptoms and, if necessary, arrange a visit to your room. If you cannot do this then arrange a visit to their surgery.

If you have any worries of questions email natalie.duric@medschool.ox.ac.uk

Hi,

A group of us (medics) are going to climb the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales over a 48 hour period on the first weekend in May…what we like to call the Three Peaks Race ;-)

There will be three groups doing the walks each competing against each other with the aim of clocking up the fastest overall walking time!

Alongside this endurance challenge we would like to raise money for K.E.E.N. an Oxford based charity where students support younger special needs children through recreational activities.

Please help us to raise as much money as possible to support this local charity. Any amount would be much appreciated.

To donate visit: http://www.justgiving.com/ThreePeaksRace
(There’s also a facebook group titled: Three Peaks Race!)

Thank you very very much!
